There is often confusion between the different legal documents or cards in Spain, especially with the NIE. It is important not to confuse their names so that you don’t spend too much time asking for papers that you don’t need at the moment.
That is why we are going to clarify the terms with you so that it can be useful for you now or in the future.
What is the NIE (Foreigner Identification Number)?
As its name indicates, ‘Foreigner Identification Number’ is only an identification number without physical support, it is not a card. This number is assigned to all foreigners in Spain to identify them before the Spanish State and is used to open bank accounts or buy a house, for example.

➡️ The NIE does not imply residence in Spain.
➡️ The NIE is not renewed or changed, it is unique and definitive.
➡️ It is interesting to note that the NIE number also counts as your fiscal number and can be called a NIF.
What is the TIE (Spanish Foreigner Card)?
The TIE is the Foreigner’s Identity Card. It is a document that proves a foreigner is legally resident in Spain.
➡️ It’s a document that proves that a foreigner is living legally in Spain.
If you are confused with the NIE, no problem, we explain it to you. The NIE is only an identification number for administrative purposes and the TIE is proof that the foreigner is living legally in Spain.

What is the CUE (Certificate of Registration of EU Citizen in Spain)?
This is called the “green NIE”.
The CUE (Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la Unión) is a document that certifies the registration of citizens from a Member State of the European Union or another State with an Agreement on the European Economic Area in the Central Registry of Foreigners in Spain.
➡️ If you are a non-Spanish EU citizen, in order to reside and work in Spain for more than 90 days, you will have to apply for a CUE.

➡️ It is typically obtained by submitting the necessary documents, including proof of employment, self-employment, or sufficient resources, as well as public or private health insurance. The document is valid for five years and must be renewed accordingly
And finally, what is the DNI?
This is the identity document for Spanish citizens. Spanish citizens do not use NIE.
➡️ It is a unique and essential document that contains personal information such as name, date of birth, address, and a unique identification number. The DNI is used for various administrative and legal purposes, including voting, accessing healthcare services, opening bank accounts, and more
